Temporary PDF printing problem: ScienceDirect full-text online

Currently, there is a problem printing PDFs of articles from any ScienceDirect journal when linking to the article through either the FindText (SFX) menu or the journal full-text links found in PubMed.  The problem occurs with Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher. If you try to print an article under these circumstances, you will get the error message, “Could not start print job.”  (This problem does not occur if you get to the article through Miner’s E-Journals list or Voyager.)

The problem with printing occurs because the article URLs are too long.  During the ScienceDirect Redesign, the PDF Address URL was extended from under 261 to (in most cases) 266 characters. This has unexpectedly created a conflict with Acrobat Reader 7 or greater.

The publisher of ScienceDirect is promising a fix by the end of October, but for now, you should save a copy of the PDF to your computer hard drive and print from that copy, or configure your Adobe Acrobat Reader so that the article opens in a Reader window not a Browser window.

To reconfigure Acrobat:

  • Open the program;
  • Click on Edit;
  • Select Preferences;
  • Select Internet from sidebar;
  • Uncheck the box for Display PDF in Browser;
  • Restart your computer.
