jungle gym dream

Young migrant children

“jungle gym dream,” by award-winning Rochester photographer Jeanne Marie Sozio, is on display through January 31, 2005, in Edward G. Miner Library, University of Rochester Medical Center.

The images reflect life at a local migrant farm workers’ camp during the summer of 2003. “I was also honored to attend and photograph a few Mexican celebrations,” said Ms. Sozio. The celebrations included a young couple getting married, Dia de los Muertos (“The Day of the Dead”), and Bienvenida, a welcome day given by local residents for all the new migrants in camps that surround the town.

At the migrant camp Ms. Sozio noticed there was no playground or safe area for the children to play. The Jungle Gym Dream project was launched to help raise money to buy the children playground equipment and outdoor toys. Ms. Sozio is dedicating a portion of all proceeds from the show toward the playground fund for migrant children. Donations from the public also are welcome.

Ms. Sozio is a native Rochesterian whose work spans traditional, black and white, digital imaging and multimedia; from personal and reflective to proactive and Art Neuve. She received her Associate's Degree at MCC in Graphic Arts and Printing, and is completing her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts with a Photography Major at Nazareth College.
