Tools and Search Filters

  • Evidence-based Nesbit Filters for Ovid Medline - Explains how to use Miner Library's stored search filters that help to separate out the more scientifically sound clinical articles dealing with therapy, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and meta-analysis. These filters are based on search strategies developed by McMaster University staff.
  • Evidence-based Nesbit Filters for Ovid CINAHL - Explains how to use Miner Library's stored search filters to find the research articles dealing with therapy, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, meta-analysis and qualitative research using Ovid CINAHL. These filters are adapted from the Medline hedges developed by McMaster University staff.
  • Expanded Filters for PubMed - Jan Glover at Yale has translated the Rochester filters for PubMed. Instructions are given for saving the filters to your PubMed Cubby.
  • PubMed Clinical Queries - Provides search filters on sensitivity or specificity of drug therapy, etiology, diagnosis or prognosis for Medline. Based on an article by Brian Haynes et al of McMaster University. (The Miner evidence-based filters are broader than those listed on PubMed). Also a "Systematic Review" filter is here.
  • Bayesian Analysis Model - Calculator for sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of tests from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
  • The CATbank - This is a creation, storage and retrieval facility for a collection of Critically Appraised Topics (CATs) from the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine. You can browse CATs and NNTs (Number Needed to Treat). Information for getting a copy of CATmaker shareware is available on the page.
  • EBM Toolbox - This includes pre-test probabilities, SpPins and SnNouts, Likelihood Ratios, Numbers Needed to Treat, and Prognosis from the Oxford Centre for Evidence Based Medicine.
  • Using Numerical Results from Systematic Reviews in Clinical Practice - Article from The Annals of Internal Medicine which reviews number need to treat and its application in making decisions about individual patients.

  • Evidence-based resources in Miner Library online: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ACP Journal Club, DARE, Clinical Evidence, InfoPOEMs/InfoRetriever, UpToDate etc. (Access to most materials restricted to URMC - affiliated users.)
  • Bandolier - Monthly EBHC Internet journal that makes comprehensible the information from systematic reviews and clinical trials.
  • Best BETS - Best Evidence Topics from the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK.
  • Campbell Collaboration - Systematic reviews of effects of social and educational policies and practices
  • CRD Databases - From the U.K. NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at University of York. Databases included are Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE), NHS Economic Evaluation Database, and Health Technology Assessment Database. DARE is also found in Miner's Library online.
  • Evidence Based Consumer Health Web Sites - From the Medical Library Association
  • Evidence-Based Nursing - Published by BMJ Publishing Group and the Royal College of Nurses. The print version is available at Miner Library.
  • informed - Once at the site, click on Publications, then informed. From the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, this newsletter is designed to "put health services information and clinical research together" for the practicing physician in Ontario Canada.
  • Journal Watch - Subscription Required. From the publishers of New England Journal of Medicine. Physicians summarize and comment on current clinical research.
  • PEDro - Physiotherapy Evidence Database - From the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy
  • PedsCCM Evidence-Based Journal Club - Collaborative effort producing critical reviews of clinical trials pertinent to the practice of pediatric critical care.
  • SUMSearch - From the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, you can search Merck Manual, PubMed, National Guideline Clearinghouse and other resources at one time.
  • TRIP Database (Turning Research into Practice) - Subscription Required. A simple search mechanism to search over 60 evidence-based sites around the world.
