    Functional Connectivity Analysis in Resting State fMRI Workshop Starts Tomorrow

    A workshop on functionally connectivity analysis in resting state fMRI will be held from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 at the Rochester Center for Brain Imaging (RCBI). The workshop will be organized by Dr. Axel Wismüller of the University of Rochester and Dr. Lutz Leistritz of Friedrich Schiller University (Jena, Germany). The goal of this workshop will be to discuss ideas related to analytic methods for recovering functionally connected networks in the human brain through resting state fMRI. Topics will include (but not limited to) mutual connectivity analysis, granger causality, non-metric clustering, independent component analysis etc.

    Computational Radiology Lab is Going to RSNA (Nov. 29 - Dec. 5)

    The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA®) is an international society of radiologists, medical physicists and other medical professionals with more than 53,000 members from 140 countries across the globe. RSNA hosts the world's premier radiology forum, drawing approximately 55,000 attendees annually to McCormick Place in Chicago.

    Dr. Wismüller's research group will present two talks at RSNA this year titled Improving Bone Strength Prediction in Proximal Femur Specimens Through Characterization of Trabecular Micro-architecture with Minkowski Functionals and Support Vector Regression and Improving Femoral Bone Strength Prediction Through Characterization of Trabecular Micro-architecture with Anisotropic Minkowski Functionals and Quantitative Anisotropic Measures.

    Mahesh Nagarajan Receives Commendation in the Outstanding Dissertation Award Competition for Engineering

    Mahesh Nagarajan's doctoral thesis titled " A Framework for Computer-Aided Diagnosis with Novel Computational Methods for Characterizing Healthy and Pathological Soft Tissue Patterns on Medical Images" was selected to receive commendation in the Outstanding Dissertation Award competition for engineering.

    Additionally, Mahesh was also awarded the Outstanding Thesis Award from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Congratulations!

    Professor Axel Wismüller receives NIH R01 Award

    Axel Wismueller, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Imaging Sciences and Biomedical Engineering has received an RO1 award from the National Institutes of Health for his project, Exploring large scale functional connectivity in the human brain: from bench to bedside. Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and its AIDS research program, this three-year project will focus on developing a novel computational framework to explore directed information transfer in the human brain, which will permit connectivity analysis in large time-series ensembles obtained from functional MRI neuro-imaging studies.

    To demonstrate the clinical applicability of this innovative framework, an associated clinical study will also investigate changes in brain networks observed in patients with HIV-related cognitive impairment under anti-retroviral therapy. The overall goal is to establish a clinical model for evaluating whole-brain functional connectivity as a novel biomarker for disease progression and therapy effectiveness. Embedded in the Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience program of the National Science Foundation, the project launches a transatlantic network that promotes teaching, training and career mentoring activities for young researchers at undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels.

    BME and Radiology Professor Axel Wismüller "Goes Green"

    Biomedical Engineering and Radiology Professor Axel W. E. Wismueller, M.D., Ph.D. explains to his students why a mathematical understanding of ecosystems can help to improve environmental awareness. Instead of thoughtlessly spraying pesticides, it may be better to rely on natural enemies for plant protection.

    Such future-oriented multidisciplinary teaching activity supports the University of Rochester in its leadership endeavor to promote sustainability in research, curricular, clinical, and outreach efforts, and to play a proactive and collaborative role in contributing to an environmentally healthy community.

    This vision for sustainability is promoted by the University's 'Go Green!' initiative, which began in 2008 with the creation of a University Council on Sustainability. In 2007, a Council Task Force developed 25 recommendations and timeframes for the implementation of university-wide programs for improvements in areas such as waste management, purchasing, and land use. Student initiatives have included the award-winning UR BioDiesel project and the EcoReps program. Read more about Sustainability @ the University of Rochester and its quest to 'Go Green'.

    The Biomedical Engineering Department is uniquely poised to contribute to the University's overall initiatives. With its combined emphasis on theoretical understanding of science and its engineering focus of solving real-world problems, the BME Department plays an important part in the Sustainability endeavor.
