The Oncogenic Roles of Sox2 in the Formation of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

We recently showed that Sox2 promotes the self-renewal of basal stem/progenitor cells in the stratified esophageal epithelium. Conditional overexpression of Sox2 leads to hyperplastic epithelium. In an inflammatory setting Sox2 cooperates with inflammation to malignantly transform the basal progenitor cells and results in squamous cell carcinoma. We are now investigating downstream molecular events that lead to the malignancy.
