Service Policy

Edward G. Miner Library is an academic health sciences library serving the University of Rochester Medical Center, including the School of Medicine & Dentistry, School of Nursing, Strong Memorial Hospital, and Eastman Dental Center. Members of the Rochester community and surrounding areas are welcome to use the library's resources for health and wellness information.  Reference librarians will provide assistance in locating appropriate materials, both in print and electronic formats. Community members may use library materials within the library, or print or photocopy them using the library's self-service printers and copiers.  There is a fee for printing and copying. However borrowing privileges, remote access to the library’s electronic resources, librarian-performed literature searches, and document delivery are restricted as described below.

Direct Borrowing (excludes all journals and the Reference Collection)

    • Any customer with a current University of Rochester ID including a Retiree ID, Spouse ID, Visiting Student ID, Volunteer ID or a purchased Miner Library Borrower ID.
    • The customers listed below are eligible to purchase a Miner Library Borrower ID.  Forms for the Miner Library Borrower ID are located at the Miner Answer Desk.
        • Staff employed by URMC affiliates (Highland Hospital, Visiting Nurse Service, Highlands at Brighton, Highlands at Pittsford) with an ID from their place of employment.  Charge: $10 (ID cost).
        • University of Rochester alumni not currently affiliated with the University.  Charge: $100/year + $10 for ID.
        • Health professionals in the community including retired clinical faculty who were not employed by the University and residents sponsored by other local hospitals.  Charge:  $100/year + $10 for ID.
        • Lawyers, paralegals and research staff from local industries.  Charge:  $250/year + $10 for ID.
        • Journalists and other staff from local media.  Charge:  $250/year + $10 for ID.
        • Pharmaceutical company representatives.  Charge: $250/year + $10 for ID.
    • Current Kodak employees with a Kodak ID and driver’s license are eligible to borrow materials at no charge using the UR Library Access card located at Miner’s Answer Desk.

Remote Access to Library Electronic Resources

    • Current University of Rochester faculty, employees, residents and students with a UR Net ID or URMC Active Directory account (log-in for URMC network and e-mail). 

Miner Library cannot create Net ID or Active Directory accounts for customers.  Customers who believe they are eligible for one of these accounts should contact their URMC department.  Customers who are not eligible for an account can use the free version of PubMed for their health-related research or contact their institution’s library (i.e. libraries at Highland, Rochester General, or Unity hospitals).

Literature Searches

    • Current University of Rochester faculty, employees, residents and students.

Customers who are not eligible for librarian-performed literature searches can use the free version of PubMed for their health-related research or contact their institution’s library (i.e. libraries at Highland, Rochester General, or Unity hospitals).

Document Delivery

    • Current University of Rochester faculty, employees, residents and students with payment of internal fee.

Customers who are not eligible for Miner’s document delivery service can use PubMed’s Loansome Doc service or contact their institution’s library (i.e. libraries at Highland, Rochester General, or Unity hospitals).
