Blackboard FAQ

Self-enroll in a course. If you have a Bb account already

  1. Select the Courses tab
  2. Search for the course in the Course Search box using part of the course name
  3. Once you have found the course, click the Enroll button next to the course name (NOT the course name)
  4. Enter the Access Code provided by your instructor. If you don't have one or you get an Access Denied message, please contact your instructor for the correct Access code.

Blackboard Login Errors

If you have troubling logging on to Blackboard you may need to change some security or privacy settings. Here are some common login errors and possible solutions for IE. If you use a different browser check tools or options items.

  1. An error occurred in the authentication module: Empty ResultSet for Session query.
  2. Your computer is not allowing cookies to be set, try

    • Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab > set slider to Medium.

  3. No authentication credentials provided with the request.
    • Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Trusted Sites > Sites > Add http://bb.urmc.rochester.edu

    • Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Custom Level > Set Active Scripting to Enable

  4. An error occurred in the authentication module: Error occurred while trying to look up the current session.
    • Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab > set slider to Medium.

If you Forget or Don't know your password

  1. Go to the Blackboard login page, http://bb.urmc.rochester.edu
  2. Click Login
  3. Click Forgot Password?
  4. This will allow you to search for your account by username or email address and then send you an email with a link where you can set a new password.

Add an instructor to a course, 2 step process, enroll user and then change role.

  1. From the Course Control Panel
  2. Select Enroll user
  3. Search for user
  4. Click box to add
  5. Select List/Modify Users
  6. Search for user
  7. Click Properties next to users name
  8. Change role to Instructor

Set up an Access Code

(like a password, so that only your students will have the ability to get into the course.)
  1. Go to your course Control Panel
  2. Settings
  3. Enrollment options
  4. Make sure check box is checked next to "Require access code to enroll"
  5. Change text next to "Require access code to enroll"
  6. Submit

Make your course Available

(All Bb courses are created unavailable by default so that students don't access the course before the instructor is ready.)
  1. Go to your course Control Panel
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Course Availability
  4. Set to "Yes"
  5. Submit

Copy content from one course to another.

  1. You must be enrolled in both the source course and the destination course
  2. Go to the Control Panel of the source course
  3. Select Course Copy
  4. Select Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course
  5. Type in the destination course id
  6. Select the content areas and items to copy into the destination course
  7. Click Submit
  8. It may take a few minutes
  9. Go to the destination course to check the content

Archive a course

An archive is a complete copy of your course from a point in time. This can be used to restore your course in the event there is a failure or you accidentally delete something. You should make an archive, which is a .zip file and save it to your computer regularly or after you make major changes.

  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Select Archive Course
  3. Click Submit
  4. Follow the prompts on the screen to save the archive file
  5. Click OK to go back to your course
