Box.com is cloud storage that provides users with the ability to easily store, access and share files and folders anywhere they can connect to the internet. The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is providing students with Box.com accounts to facilitate sharing of course content and collaborating within your PBLs.
Note: For security reasons, Box.com is only for course content and should never contain any Protected Health Information (PHI), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), or other legally restricted data. (Your personal librarians can guide you towards further definitions of such.)
Are you just getting started with Box.com, but are unsure where to begin?
Some of the information you can find in this reference includes:
Many iPad apps provide easy ways to connect to your Box.com account. Additionally, there is a Box.com iPad app that provides the most common Box.com features. You can also use the Safari browser on your iPad to access the full Box.com site and manage your files/folders.
Box.com provides free synchronizing applications for Macs and PCs that allow you to have a local folder and all of its content sync with a corresponding folder in your Box.com account. This can either be done automatically when a change is detected, or on demand when you initiate a sync.
Notability is the .PDF annotating application provided to SMD medical students for their iPads. Annotation provides users with the ability to add their own mark-ups to PDFs, especially those collaborating as a team on shared documents. The types of annotations that can be created and edited in Notability include typewriter text boxes, popup comments ("sticky notes"), text highlights, freehand drawings, lines, arrows, rectangles, ovals, cloudy shapes, text underlines, strikeouts, text insertion marks. In addition to supporting large PDF and TXT files Notability also handles the most popular file types:
Notability lets you create folders, move, copy and rename your files; zip, email and unzip them; plus send your files to other apps.
Note: The Notability app does not natively provide the ability to move files within folders on Box.com. To do so you need to download the file you wish to move and then upload it to the desired destination folder. If you log in to Box.com from a browser you can easily move files within folders on Box.com in a single step.More information and support for Notability
