MedlinePlus Mobile

Review Author:
Platform: iOS
App or Mobile Website: Mobile Web (see Special Instructions)
Does it require WiFi to work? Yes
Category: Health and Fitness
Price: Free
Special Instructions: Available at http://m.medlineplus.gov/
Tasks or Searches Tested: Searched osteoporosis, heart attack, lipitor, and metformin.
Design: Screen layout is simple and the site is easy to navigate.
Functionality: This site does not have a reputation for crashing. One inconsistency: the osteoporosis link provides links to more information that mimics the osteoporosis information on the full site, but the heart attack link did not lead to all of the information available on the full site. This inconsistency may exist for other topics as well.
Content: Contains a subset of the information available on the full MedlinePlus site. It has disease, wellness, and drug information as well as health news, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, and a dictionary with audio pronunciations. Available in English and Spanish. A search box is available for quick searches. It lacks the "Interactive/Cool Tools" content in the full site. Some, but not all, of the health topics information may duplicate the information available on the full site.
Other Comments: MedlinePlus Mobile is a "must have" site for clinicians who use mobile devices in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting because it provides quick access to consumer health information that they can discuss with their patients. Providers can refer patients interested in additional information to the full MedlinePlus site.
