MedScape

Review Author: Lorraine_Porcello@URMC.Rochester.edu
Platform: iOS
App or Mobile Website: App (link to App Store)
Does it require WiFi to work? Yes
Category: Reference
Price: Free
Special Instructions: WiFi is not necessary to access saved references.
Tasks or Searches Tested: Browsed through all navigation elements, looking at the first available news article, educational entry, drug class, etc. Browsed to article and images for cochlear implant surgery, and to article and video for paracentesis, via Protocols & Procedures module. Used the search function to find information on dextromethorphan/guaifenesin, and on knee reconstruction.
Design: The intro page is completely self-explanatory; entry at any point immediately leads to content. The tabs on the left and columns along the top of each article make the content easy to view and navigate.
Functionality: Search box automatically updates the list of results as the user types, so that it's immediately obvious if there are no results at all. Browsing to desired content is straightforward.
Content: Includes module for drugs, OTC's & herbals; a drug interactions checker; references for diseases and conditions; procedures and protocols; medical news articles from 34 specialties (updated daily); and CME content.
Other Comments: It's easy to save most desired content for off-line access, and all saved content is organized by module (drugs, news, procedures, etc.). It took me a while to find any content that had images or videos, and I only did so by browsing; there's no way that I can find to filter articles to only those with video/images. Also, updates are done right in the app rather than via iTunes.
