Miner Provides access to refWorks

Are you looking for a convenient way to organize references and format bibliographies and manuscripts?  Are you currently using EndNote or Reference Manager as your bibliographic management tool but would like to stop purchasing and installing software upgrades?  Miner Library, in partnership with the UR River Campus Libraries and Information Technology Services, is providing a University-wide subscription to RefWorks, a web-based bibliographic management service.  Like EndNote and Reference Manager, RefWorks imports citations from databases such as Ovid Medline and PubMed, allows users to create personal databases of references, and formats bibliographies and manuscripts in 250+ citation styles.  But RefWorks has many unique features:

  • RefWorks is web-based, so you can access and update personal databases from any computer connected to the Internet either on campus or off site.
  • RefWorks is available at no charge for all UR users.  You do not need to purchase any software.
  • RefWorks is never out of date.  Upgrades are included in the subscription, so all UR users automatically have access to the most recent version.
  • RefWorks is compatible with both the Windows and Mac platforms.
  • RefWorks provides a helper application called Write-N-Cite for creating in-text citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word documents.
  • In early 2006 the RefShare module will be added.  RefShare allows RefWorks users to share their references with members of their own institution and with non-UR researchers having Internet access.

RefWorks can be accessed from Miner Library Online.  Click on RefWorks under the Research & Publishing heading.  Each user must create an individual account to protect the integrity of their data.  To learn more about RefWorks, check out the RefWorks Tutorial and Quick Start Guide.  For help contact the Miner Library Reference Desk at 275-2487 or miner_information@urmc.rochester.edu.
