LSLC On The Road Can't come to the LSLC? We'll come to you! Our LSLC on the Road programs feature practicing scientists, LSLC staff, and loads of science activities. We bring all our supplies and turn your location into a fully functioning science lab. These 80-minute programs are available to secondary schools within 30 miles of the LSLC. The programs being featured for Spring 2015 are HIV Vaccine Development and LSLC Outbreak! The cost for each program is based on class size. For classes of up to 30 students: One 80-minute session is $500, additional same day sessions are $300. For classes with more than 30 students: One 80-minute session is $625, additional same day sessions are $375. HIV Vaccine Development The Life Sciences Learning Center uses laboratory simulations to illustrate how an HIV vaccine is developed and then tested to be sure that it is safe and effective. During this engaging case study students will learn about how individual behavior can influence disease transmission and how the immune system responds to subunits of the HIV virus genome. They will then learn about using immunoassays to determine the effectiveness of potential HIV vaccines. Laboratory Techniques include: Gel electrophoresis Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbant Assay (ELISA) method LSLC Outbreak! How does a disease spread rapidly through a population, and how can you prevent an epidemic? Our LSLC Outbreak On the Road program uses engaging, hand-on activities designed for students to better understand the scientific method, disease transmission, pathways of infection, and methods to reduce the spread of diseases. Laboratory Techniques include: Epidemic simulations Antibiotic susceptibility and resistance testing Sign up for our LSLC On the Road classes here.
