A little exercise can do a lot of good, especially if it is during Karen’s Walk and 5K Run on Saturday, April 6. This 11th annual event supports local heart failure research and will be held at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Nathaniel Rochester Field.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K run and walk begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $15 or $10 for RIT students. There is also a children’s fun run.
The Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity at RIT organizes the in memory of Karen Decker, who died of postpartum cardiomyopathy, a few weeks after giving birth to her first child, Hannah Grace. Originally, the walk supported a college scholarship fund for Hannah and evolved into a fund-raiser for research and to raise awareness of the rare disease of the heart muscle that develops in some women just after childbirth.
The fraternity has raised more than $26,700 for the Karen Decker Research for Cardiomyopathy Fund at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
