Activities

Graduate Student Society

The Graduate Student Society (GSS) is an organization that supports the graduate students in the School of Medicine and Dentistry and exists to coordinate social events, organize charity/volunteer activities in the community and to honor outstanding faculty and students within the SMD. GSS serves as a key interface between the faculty and the students, especially for first year students, and is the main graduate student organization that crosses departmental and cluster boundaries.

Tutoring & Mentoring Programs

Available through the Center for Advocacy, Community Health, Education and Diversity. (CACHED) These programs allow graduate students the opportunity to tutor and mentor junior high and high school students at Rochester-area schools.

  • Middle & High School Tutoring/Mentoring Program

School of Medicine and Dentistry Students provide one-on-one mentoring and tutoring for Rochester City School District middle and high school students who are academically at risk for failing their core subjects. Students set their schedule in conjunction with the high school student and his/her parent or guardian.
  • Nazareth Middle School Math Club

School of Medicine and Dentistry students tutor 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who need help with math.   Nazareth is an inner-city Catholic School located on Lake Avenue in the City of Rochester.

Science Ambassador's Program

Students in our department have the opportunity to practice their teaching and communication skills by participating in programs offered by the University of Rochester’s Life Sciences Learning Center. Microbiology and Immunology students have participated in paid 4 month Scientist Instructor internships, as well joined a cadre of volunteer Science Ambassadors who visit local schools and community groups to share their excitement for science.

Whether you are interested in teaching a little or a lot, have the time to devote to an internship or just want to participate here and there, the Life Sciences Learning Center gives you many different ways that you can get practical experience and training in teaching and communication to lay audiences.

This year, the Department of Microbiology is proud to partner with the Life Sciences Learning Center to provide HIV research awareness programs, with graduate students in our department serving as ambassadors to local city schools. For more information, contact Shaw-Ree Chen at 585-275-0252.
