The General Medicine Unit of the Department of Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital provides clinical care in the ambulatory and hospital settings. Faculty members in the unit play integral roles in the internal medicine, combined internal medicine-pediatric residency programs and medical school educational programs. Research initiatives are focused on areas of medical education and improvement in clinical practice and outcomes. The unit collectively provides community service to the greater Rochester area. A dedicated group of internists certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine provide excellent clinical care. In the ambulatory area, physicians serve as primary care providers individually through the Internal Medicine Group practice and also in conjunction with the Categorical Internal Medicine Residents as part of the Faculty/Resident Practice. Additionally, evaluation and health counseling is provided through the Executive Health Program which is offered to employees by area companies and corporations. Acknowledged for their excellence as teachers, faculty members play key administrative and directive roles in the medical school and the categorical internal medicine and internal medicine-pediatric residency programs. They provide teaching in the ambulatory and hospital areas for these different learners and have been acknowledged for their achievements with teaching honors and awards. Research initiatives related to clinical outcomes include evaluations of adequacy of pain medication dosing, viral hepatitis screening in alcoholics and smoking cessation. Those research projects regarding resident education are focused on teaching of humanism and physician-patient relationships. Medical student education research includes functional and geriatric assessment and evaluation of delirium. |
