Clinical Responsibilities

Hospital Medicine Division faculty oversee the delivery of comprehensive hospital medicine to a large and diverse group of patients at Strong Memorial Hospital. The division attends or consults on a daily inpatient census of 70-100 patients. The division made over 18,000 inpatient visits last academic year. We currently staff the hospital with 7 full-time hospitalists on weekdays and 4 on weekends. This includes an Orthopedic Hospitalist Service that cares for fracture patients with complicated medical issues. In addition, we recently instituted an Evening Hospitalist position to facilitate the admission of patients during the busy evening hours.

To ensure that our patients receive comprehensive and efficient inpatient care, we collaborate closely with residents and midlevel practitioners. Although residents and midlevel practitioners often manage patients seperately with hospitalist attendings, the division continues work on the development of an integrated teaching service in which residents and midlevel practitioners collaborate to optimize clinical and educational outcomes. We also work closely with an extended multidisciplinary group of inpatient providers including nurses and nurse managers, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, pharmacists, and others. The HMD faculty have emerged as capable leaders of these large inpatient teams.

In support of the clinical mission of the medical center, HMD faculty serve in key administrative roles. For instance, Dr. Alec O'Connor is Co-Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Dr. Ali leads the hospital's efforts to improve quality of care for patients with pneumonia. Drs. Chris D'Angelo and Bill Novak are junior hospitalist faculty who serve as medical directors for dedicated medical wards.
