What is a Hospitalist

A physician that specializes in the care of patients during their stay in a hospital. Hospitalists take care of patients as your primary care physician (internist) might, including ordering treatments, tests, and consulting with specialty physicians when appropriate. All Hospitalists are Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

What is a PA / NP

Physician Assistant (PA): A health care professional who evaluates and treats patients in collaboration with a physician.

Nurse Practitioner (NP): Registered nurses who have completed Master’s level training. They also evaluate and treat patients in collaboration with a physician, but many manage less complicated illnesses independently.

 

 

Why is a Hospitalist Caring for Me

Your doctor may request that a Hospitalist take care of you during your hospital stay. In this way, you have the benefit of being seen by a physician who is focused on the care of hospitalized patients. In addition, this enables your doctor to be more available to you in the office.

 

 

How Is My Care Coordinated

When you are admitted to the hospital, you will be seen by a Hospitalist and a PA , NP, or a resident (physician in training). We will update your doctor with major changes in your condition and fax an updated medical history and medication list at discharge. Upon discharge you will return to the care of your doctor. If you do not have a doctor we will assist you in finding one at discharge.
