Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases have been principal threats to health throughout the history of man. The fight against deadly microbes relies largely on knowledge of the microbe's interactions with the body. Our Infectious Diseases Division specializes in viral infections such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Influenza, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and Dengue. We have expertise in the community surveillence of pathogens, vaccine research for HIV, vaccine research for influenza and the development of treatments for viral, fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Along with offering care for every variety of infectious disease, our New York State designated AIDS Center provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for persons with HIV infection.

Respiratory Pathogens Research Center

The role of the RPRC is to provide the NIAID Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) with the capability of conducting translational and clinical research focused on the development and optimization of control measures for viral and bacterial respiratory pathogens.

New York Influenza Center of Excellence

The New York Influenza Center of Excellence (NYICE) is collaborative, interdisciplinary approach involving investigators in the fields of immunology, virology, biochemistry, medicine, pediatrics, statistics and bioinformatics that will addresss directly the issues of cross-protective immunity and virus adaptation to the mammalian host. Our goal is to provide a truly transforming approach to influenza research.

To provide leadership, services and infrastructure necessary to: establish multidisciplinary collaborations that achieve high-impact discoveries; support the early career development of diverse young HIV/AIDS investigators; and to establish a distinctive scientific identity, placing the University of Rochester at the forefront of HIV/AIDS research.
