The Rochester medical community has actively promoted an awareness of palliative care, encouraging collaboration among the University of Rochester Medical Center, all hospitals, all insurers, nursing home facilities, and many community agencies.
Under the leadership of the Rochester Health Commission, an advisory group of consumers, health care providers, and caregivers formed the End-of-Life / Palliative Care Initiative. It addresses:
- Pain Management: Similar pain treatment protocols and pain management strategies are offered throughout the community, with outreach to physicians, nurses, patients, and families.
- Advance Directives: There are forms and a common guidebook that meet all New York State requirements for selection of a Health Care Proxy, or completion of a Living Will.
- Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (MOLST): This is a community-wide Do-Not-Resuscitate and Do-Not-Intubate protocol, and provides guidance about the patient's view of other potentially life-sustaining treatments.
