Fibrous astrocytosis: Fibrous astrocytosis is manifested in early stages by enlargement and eosinophilic staining of astrocytic cytoplasm as well as enlargement of nuclei and nucleoli. Astrocytes with abundant pink cytoplasm such as seen in this slide are often called Nissl plump astrocytes or gemistocytic astrocytes. They are giving rise to spider-like processes that form a glial scar. In later stages, the pink perinuclear cytoplasm involutes leaving the prominent processes as the predominant feature.
