Arteriosclerosis of small blood vessel: This is a trichrome stain of a small artery within the deep substance of the brain that shows marked thickening of its wall due to atherosclerosis. Arteriosclerotic degeneration with thrombosis involving small arteries in the central nervous system is the cause of lacunar infarcts, and may be associated with hypertension and to a lesser extent diabetes.
