Multiple sclerosis: The brain in this photograph is unfixed and several areas of discoloration can be identified in the white matter. The lesions of multiple sclerosis are gray due to loss of myelin and replacement by astroglial fibers. There is a moderately large sclerotic area lying over the superior aspect of both ventricles, emphasizing the frequent periventricular location of these lesions. |
