Multiple sclerosis; myelin stain of spinal cord: There is a large lesion of multiple sclerosis in this section of cervical spinal cord, forming a broad band of demyelination extending from the lateral column on the left through the major portion of both posterior columns into the lateral column on the right. Note three things in particular: 1) myelin in the areas affected is virtually totally destroyed; 2) involvement is asymmetrical; and 3) gray matter is involved (myelin in gray matter is destroyed, while neurons remain intact).
