Old contusions: The sequence of changes following a contusion of the brain resembles an infarct not only in the early stages following the injury but also throughout the subsequent stages of organization and cavitation. In the "contrecoup" lesions on the inferior aspect of the frontal lobes in this slide one sees superficial cavitation and shrinkage of cortex in several small foci, accompanied by a rusty color which is due to the persistence of hemosiderin. Additionally, there is marked fibrosis of the meninges at these cavitated sites.
