Hypoxia; eosinophilic Purkinje cells: When the brain is deprived of oxygen for more than a few minutes as, for example, in cardiac arrest, neurons in certain areas of the brain are selectively vulnerable to the hypoxic insult. Among these are the Purkinje cells of the cerebellum. All of the Purkinje neurons in this slide are undergoing eosinophilic neuronal necrosis, whereas the granule cells, in contrast, appear normal. |
