Hypoxia; laminar (pseudolaminar) necrosis: In some patients who survive for several weeks following an episode of severe global hypoxia, the cerebral cortex may appear as in this gross photograph. The cortical ribbon is discolored due to necrosis of neurons in deeper layers. In other cases there may be massive necrosis of the brain, reflecting the increased severity of the injury. |
