MRI - Syringomyelia: This 50-year-old man presented with a gradually diminishing ability to walk. He had a past medical history of hypertension, Crohn's disease and recent frequent urinary tract infections. Examination revealed a loss of pinprick and temperature sensation extending inferiorly from the lower neck to the umbilicus, atrophy and weakness of intrinsic hand strength and a bilateral spastic paraparesis of the lower extremities. This sagittal T2-weighted MRI on the left shows an intrinsic cystic lesion of the cervicothoracic spinal cord with signal intensity equal to cerebrospinal fluid. The corresponding axial T2-weighed MRI on the right shows the abnormal signal intensity to be located in the central region of the spinal cord. |
