RESIDENCY PROGRAM
CLINICAL FACILITIES
The neurosurgical beds number 24 and are located on the 5-3600 unit. There is also a ward of 24 neurology beds in the adjacent 5-1600 unit. Neurological critical beds are available on 8-1400 and 8-1600, the surgical and trauma ICU's, respectively. These units are staffed by critical care faculty, fellows and residents. In addition, there is a four-bed neurosurgical step-down unit on 5-3600 (included in the number above) for the care of patients with intermediate needs between that of the ICU and the floor.
The neurosurgical clinics are in several locations. Clinics are located at the following locations: Strong Health Neurosurgery Clinic on the 1st floor 5000 area, Lattimore Road building, 4th floor Ambulatory Care Building (Dr. Silberstein's Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic) adjoining the Hospital and several other private offices located throughout the community and region.
There is also a well-defined resident clinic, which is supervised by Dr. Robert Bakos, in the Strong Health Neurosurgery Clinic, on Wednesday afternoons. During this time, the residents see approximately five to seven patients in conjunction with the faculty.
All the clinics have specific exam rooms and consultation rooms as well as an office with computers, phones, and dictating equipment. This experience provides ample opportunity for the residents to be intimately involved in the pre-operative and post-operative evaluation of patients.
There are two dedicated neurological surgery operating rooms with microsurgical capabilities at the University of Rochester Medical Center at Strong Memorial Hospital. New state-of-the-art operating rooms were opened in February 2002. These spacious rooms contain ceiling mounted ancillary equipment as well as state-of-the-art audio/visual aids to surgery. There is one new dedicated Neurosurgical OR in the new area.
Neurosurgical procedures are scheduled five to six days a week. With the opening of the new ORs, the Department has block time for between 1 and 3 operating rooms daily. Additional elective booking time is also permitted five days per week, depending on scheduling availability. The PGY-II, III, IV, VI and VII are engaged in operative activities depending on their rotation schedule, the operative schedule, and the call schedule.
There is an on-call room available adjacent to the Neurosurgical inpatient unit equipped with a computer and printer. In addition, each resident has a work area within the Department.
Each resident who enters the program is given a personal library of Neurosurgical texts, valued at $2,500. These are purchased by the Department and given to the resident at the beginning of the PGY II (NS 1) year. In addition, $1,000 is put toward the purchase of each resident's operating loupes. This provides the residents with their own textbook supply, plus the Department has a resident library with a variety of newly purchased current textbooks. Along with contributions from the faculty, this provides a 200-book standing Neurosurgical Library.
The Medical Center library is located in the same building and carries 1200 journal titles and subscribes to 400 electronic journals. The Library carries more than 230,000 volumes, journals, books, thesis, and government documents.
