RESIDENCY PROGRAM
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Neurosurgery Residency program is six years in length (72 months) after completion of a PGY-I year in General Surgery. This includes one year dedicated to laboratory research.
Residents are assigned in three-month blocks to a clinical service supervised by two attending faculty. Thus, for each of the PGY-II to IV levels, each resident completes three 3-month rotations. The fourth 3-month rotation is generally spent on an elective, either Neurology, Neuroradiology, or Neuropathology. By the end of the PGY-IV (NS-3) year, the resident has rotated through each of these electives.
During the PGY-V year, the resident is dedicated to research and has very limited clinical responsibilities.
At the PGY-VI (NS-4) level, the resident is on the clinical service for two 3-month blocks and for the remaining two 3-month blocks, rotates on electives consisting of Neurology (3 months), Peripheral Nerve Surgery (6 weeks), and Vascular Surgery (6 weeks). The resident also spends an additional month on the NS clinical service in the last quarter.
