RESIDENT RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

In recognition of the educational value provided by focused research training, the Department has designated a full year for research experience during the residency program. During this year, the resident is designated as a Research Fellow in Neurological Surgery and spends a full year in a research laboratory, working with one of the departmental research faculty or a faculty member from a related Medical Center research area. The resident is expected to attend all Neurosurgical educational conferences. During this year, it is expected that the resident will do substantive research resulting in the minimum of one publication in a peer reviewed basic science journal and at least one podium presentation at a significant national Neurosurgical meeting.

The resident is expected to make a monthly presentation on the status of his work at the monthly faculty meeting. This presentation provides the opportunity for faculty input and guidance and also ensures that the resident's research is moving at the appropriate pace.

The year of laboratory research provides a unique opportunity for assisting learning, critical analysis and productive investigation in an area of concentration within neurosurgery and its related disciplines. This year of concentration furnishes the resident with an otherwise unobtainable experience and the critical assessment and independent investigative analysis that will serve him/her well regardless of his/her chosen subspecialty area.

The Department has designated academic development funds to support this research training. All other years are funded by the Hospital.
