Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto with Chamber Orchestra Zora Mihailovich, piano soloist University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra Historical perspective by Dr. Robert Bakos |
Performing music is one of the most complex forms of skilled serial action produced by the human brain. The brain not only guides rapid, fine motor movements, but ‘orchestrates’ the intangible, subtle variations of tempo, timbre, and phrasing that are collectively referred to as aesthetic style. Yet most amazing of all, even in the convoluted Mozart opera or monumental Beethoven symphony, there are simple, charming, infectious little melodies that can give sustained pleasure for days after the performance.
Here at the Medical Center there are many parallels to these musical marvels. We deal with illnesses that affect the incredibly complex human body and mind, but seek the simple straight-forward treatments to restore health and happiness. Likewise, the scientist approaches the daunting complexity of the cell or gene, both healthy and diseased, seeking a simplicity that, step by step, unravels its mysteries.
Come to relax and allow the music to perform its magic.
Put your work aside and let there be music on your mind.
