Cardiologist Named Acting Head of Medical Center
Cardiologist Mark B. Taubman, M.D., chair of the Department of Medicine, this summer was named acting CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center while Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., recuperates from a serious spinal injury.
Berk, also a cardiologist, was injured in a bicycling accident in late May. Since early June he has been recovering at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, N.J. To send a message to Berk or his family, please visit http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/berk/.
Taubman is the chair of the largest single department in the Medical Center with more than 1,000 faculty and staff who work in 13 units devoted to patient care, research and education, and a $150 million budget. Berk recruited him to the University of Rochester in 2003 from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine where he served as director of Cardiovascular Research. When Berk was appointed CEO in 2007, Taubman was selected as chair and Charles E. Dewey Professor of Medicine after a national search.
Berk’s daughter Sarah has signed up to run in the New York City Marathon in his honor. On Sunday, Nov. 1, Sarah will be running with “Team Reeve,” which supports the Christopher Reeve Foundation.
