Research

Doctor looking into a microscopeIn 2010, we made crucial strides in our research mission, leading programs and reporting research findings that directly impact patient care, jumpstarting comparative effectiveness research designed to improve quality and decrease the cost of care, and enhancing our world-leading capability in clinical and translational science.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry welcomed a new dean, Mark B. Taubman, M.D., who took the reins in March 2010 and immediately began to address the many challenges facing academic medical centers like ours, including planning for a future in which federal dollars alone will not support our robust research enterprise. The School of Medicine and Dentistry continued to buck the national trend of declining research funding, with a substantial increase in funding from the National Institutes of Health. And we entered the home stretch in the development of one of the nation’s first Clinical and Translational Science buildings, which will bring researchers and scientific support services together, accelerating the translational research process.

The impact of our research is stronger than ever, helping to shape the thinking of scientists across the country and around the world. A 2010 report by Thomson Reuters placed the University of Rochester on a short list of influential U.S. research institutions whose publications were referred to most frequently by colleagues. The report, which ranks the University of Rochester 17th in the nation, is a testament to the significant, innovative and high-quality work being done by researchers here at the School of Medicine and School of Nursing.

The Scientist magazine ranked the University of Rochester one of the top 15 institutions in the nation for scientists to work in its annual survey of “Best Places to Work for Scientists in Academia.” The University is the only academic institution in New York to achieve “top 15” status.

Key to our success is the strong spirit of teamwork that sets the Medical Center apart. Our culture of support and collaboration keeps us a step ahead and positions us for continued success in the future.
