Message from the Board Chair
I complete my final year as Chair of the URMC board with deep gratitude to my fellow board members who generously work to ensure that this institution remains the region’s finest provider of health care services and one of the finest advanced care medical centers in the country. For each of us, it is an honor to bring our financial, operational, and strategic planning expertise to this remarkable organization. We appreciate our obligation to ensure that this Medical Center’s priorities and decisions reflect the values of all those it serves.
In that spirit, I am proud that our board has championed initiatives that make our care safer and of ever higher quality. We have been encouraged by the eagerness of URMC’s administrative and clinical leaders to embrace a culture that continuously improves patient safety.
By design, every board meeting starts with a review and discussion of quality and safety performance. Board members regularly participate in safety rounds, interacting with front-line staff regarding critical issues that affect patient care. The board participates in monthly quality meetings with clinical chairs where honest, substantive discussions are held. We review weekly updates that track real-time progress on reducing complications. We objectively view our overall results in the context of our national peers within the University HealthSystem Consortium.
This partnership between volunteer and paid leaders contributed to URMC easily earning full reaccreditation in this year’s Joint Commission survey, to a substantial reduction in surgical site and central line infections, and to process measure scores that are among the best for academic hospitals.
I thank each and every board member for their contributions to URMC and the community it serves.
