New Leadership: Taubman Takes Reins as Dean
As Mark Taubman began his term as the tenth dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry he faced many obstacles, including the sobering reality that federal research funding is in jeopardy and can no longer be relied upon to maintain large research institutions like ours. Additionally, the public continues to grow skeptical, and impatient with the pace of research, fervently awaiting new and greatly needed treatment options for a wide range of diseases.
In 2010, Taubman mobilized all Medical Center chairs and center directors in a process of revising priorities and reviewing new funding models, including looking beyond NIH to other sources of funding. He also established the directive to take full advantage of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute to find and pursue opportunities to better integrate basic and clinical science, speeding developments from the lab to patients.
As a basic scientist and practicing cardiologist, Taubman has a diverse and valuable perspective that lends itself to the difficult problem-solving he faces in his role as dean. In addition to his broad experience, Taubman is leveraging the collaboration we are known for in taking an inclusive, proactive approach to ensure the Medical Center continues to thrive in the years ahead.
