Discovery Ball a Great Example of Community Support

Dear Friends,

Richard FisherAs we enjoy the start of the summer season, it provides us an appropriate time to pause and reflect on the many good things happening at the Wilmot Cancer Center.

The recent celebration of our 12th Annual Discovery Ball was a fitting testament to the generous and thoughtful support our community continues to lend to our efforts to bring world class cancer care and research to those in the greater Rochester area and beyond. More than 700 attended the event and helped raise over $651,000 dollars. Those funds will support the research efforts of Wilmot Cancer Center scientists and clinicians dedicated to ensuring that the cure starts here!

The Discovery Ball also afforded us the opportunity to honor Richard T. Bell with our Inspiration Award. The spirit and determination that Richard exhibited in beating throat cancer has been exceeded only by the compassion he has shown for others facing cancer and his personal commitment to fighting the disease by funding important research.

On behalf of the entire Wilmot Cancer Center team and, more importantly, those whom we serve, I would like to thank Bob and Sue Kessler for the exemplary job they did in chairing this year’s Ball. While the venue was new, the results were inspiring as usual. Once again hundreds of caring and generous people demonstrated their belief that our community deserves the very best in cancer care and research. Special thanks to all of our committee members, our corporate and individual sponsors, volunteers and all of the attendees for their warm and generous support of the Wilmot Cancer Center.

I am also pleased to share that our partnership with Roswell Park Cancer Institute continues to expand and come into sharper focus. This spring we awarded seed grants of  $100,000 each to eight teams that include researchers from each institution working collaboratively on a variety of exciting and promising studies. Funding was made possible by a $1.25 million gift from E. Phillip Saunders, an anonymous gift of $1 million, and generous support from Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield and two Buffalo area insurers. I am extremely optimistic that this burgeoning partnership will yield great fruit for Roswell and the Wilmot Cancer Center, as well as the communities we serve.

Finally, the expansion project that will transform the Wilmot Cancer Center into a comprehensive cancer hospital continues to proceed on schedule. If you want to check on the progress, we have set up a webcam that allows you to see work in real time. Just visit http://128.151.100.210.

Enjoy your summer, and thank you for your continued interest in and support of the Wilmot Cancer Center.

Sincerely,
