Match day 2011

Match Day completed a demanding, often frustrating and sometimes amusing journey for the 109 members of the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s Class of 2011.

The first official step was the Electronic Residency Application Service. Through ERAS, the class submitted 2,441 applications, according to a comprehensive survey led by 2011 School of Medicine graduate Anne Whitehead.  Forty nine percent of the class placed applications on Sept. 1, the day ERAS opened.

Between Oct. 1 and Feb. 17, members of the Class of 2011 went on 964 interviews. They traveled to 42 states. One made seven interviews in seven days. As a group, class members went on 651 flights, dealing with 51 cancelled flights. They took 49 train rides, 40 bus rides and 362 car trips. They spent 596 nights in hotels, stayed on the couches of 215 friends, relatives, friends of friends, relatives of friends and relatives of friends of friends. They were caught in 130 snowstorms.

Twenty members of the Class of 2011 will be at Strong Memorial Hospital for their full residency. A total of 26 will be in the state of New York and 10 will be in California. The rest of the Class of 2011 will be spread among 27 other states plus the District of Columbia for their residencies.
