NIH Renews Clinical and Translational Science Award

The University of Rochester Medical Center has received a $21 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, a renewal of a $40 million award made to the Medical Center in 2006 to create and expand research, education, and support programs intended to cut the time needed to turn scientific insight into new ways to treat disease. Microbiologists Discover How Cavity-Causing Microbes Invade Heart

University of Rochester Medical Center scientists have discovered the tool that bacteria, normally found in our mouths, use to invade heart tissue, causing a dangerous and sometimes lethal infection of the heart known as endocarditis. The work raises the possibility of creating a screening tool – perhaps a swab of the cheek, or a spit test – to gauge a dental patient’s vulnerability to the condition.

Rochester Area Couple Donate $1.5 Million for Cancer Research

Phil and Marilyn Wehrheim, longtime supporters of Rochester area charities and foundations, are strengthening the research efforts of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center with a $1.5 million commitment to fund the Philip and Marilyn Wehrheim Professorship. The gift is being given to support Craig Jordan, Ph.D., Director of Hematological Translational Research for the Wilmot Cancer Center.

Medical Center’s Chen Elected President of American College of Cardiology Chapter

University of Rochester Medical Center cardiologist Leway Chen, M.D., M.P.H., was recently elected to the Board of Governors for the American College of Cardiology. During his three-year term, Chen will serve as president of the New York Cardiological Society and then president of the ACC’s New York Chapter.
