Rochester Medicine Magazine - Summer 2012

Features

What do a young medical student, a self-described homelessness activist and a family physician have in common? Street Medicine ⎯ a means of providing medical care directly to the homeless where they live. Students, doctors, and administrators at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry recently created UR Street Outreach, a new student-run medical outreach program. "Taking it to the Streets" is the first in a series that explores how UR Street Outreach helps the homeless, bridges the gap between homeless and the medical system, and helps train docs in applied medicine, while teaching them to have empathy, rounding out their medical education.
