The Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, our region's federally designated organ procurement organization, on Sunday afternoon will honor those individuals who lost their lives, as well as their families who had the love and courage to give the gift of life - organ donation - in order to save someone else.
The annual "Gift of Life Celebration" will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the RIT Inn & Conference Center.
In addition to families of organ donors, the event also will be attended by transplant recipients and representatives from six regional hospitals. Last year's dinner attracted about 350 people.
A buffet lunch will be held from noon to 1 p.m. and speakers will comment from 1 to 3 p.m. They include:
· Peter J. Papadakos, M.D., associate professor of anesthesiology and surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital
· David Beatson, Strong Memorial's first heart transplant recipient
· Ellen and Stephen Karnisky, donor parents whose son died last year
· Ellen Kulik, a mother of a donor from Syracuse who co-founded the Donor Family Network, which provides crisis support and aftercare to new and potential donor families
