Ronald L. Bittner Memorial Golf Classic Aug. 24
Fourth Annual Event Raises Funds for Brain Tumor Research
August 02, 2001
The fourth annual Ronald L. Bittner Memorial Golf Classic will be held Friday, Aug. 24th, at Bristol Harbour Golf Club in Canandaigua.
Bittner, former Frontier Corporation chief executive officer, succumbed to a brain tumor in August 1997. His family created the Memorial Golf Classic to honor his memory and raise money for research in combating brain tumors at the University of Rochester. Bittner, a UR alumnus, was chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Frontier Corp., during the 1990s.
The golf classic has grown dramatically and the event includes both morning and afternoon 18-hole scrambles. The $200 registration fee covers golf, cart, shirts, breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails, as well as opportunities to win prizes throughout the day.
To date, the golf classics have raised $275,000 for the Bittner fund, which has been used to cover graduate and post-graduate fellowships in the UR Department of Neurological Surgery. This includes the development of better image-guided surgeries for brain tumors and developing collaborative research programs in cell biology and stem cell therapeutics. These efforts involve researchers at the University of Rochester, as well as other universities and industrial partners. It is anticipated that this research will lead to novel biological therapies that can be delivered to brain tumors through the use of image-guided surgical equipment.
To participate, contact Nikki Bittner at 223-3988 or Lanie Bittner at 248-8945, or go to www.bittnergolf.org.
