UR Chair to Lead National Pathology Organization
September 28, 1999
Steven L. Spitalnik, M.D., chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has been named president-elect of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists. He begins his one-year term as president in June 2000.
The Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists is a 700-member organization formed in 1966 to encourage and advance the highest standards of education in laboratory medicine in medical school and related curricula, and to promote resident training and post-graduate education of physicians and scientists in clinical pathology.
Spitalnik has been a member of the organization for more than a decade. While he was a pathology resident at the University of Rochester, he was the recipient of three Young Investigator Awards, in 1981, 1982 and 1983. The honor, presented to 30 individuals each year by the Academy, provides funding for researchers-in-training so that they may present their work at the annual meeting.
Among former presidents of the organization is Dean Arvan, M.D., former Director of Clinical Laboratories and Acting Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who served as Academy president from 1979-80.
Spitalnik's induction ceremony will take place in June at the organization's annual meeting in Salt Lake City.
