Michael Arena, R.R.T., Receives URMC Chairman’s Quality Award

During the annual meeting of the University of Rochester Medical Center Board, chairman Ronald B. Knight presented the second annual Chairman’s Quality Award to Michael Arena, R.R.T. The award recognizes employees whose professional and personal standards exemplify quality patient care. Arena is one of four employees honored with the award.
Arena, a registered respiratory care practitioner at Strong Memorial Hospital, was honored with the Chairman’s Quality Award for his extraordinary dedication to patients and his profession alike. In presenting the award, Knight cited Arena for "being an individual who understands that change is inherent in health care," and for his ability to "embrace advances in practice and technology."
Arena, who is a licensed respiratory therapy technician and holds an associate’s degree from Monroe Community College, joined Strong Memorial Hospital in 1994. In addition to his respiratory care registry and licensure, Arena is a perinatal-pediatric respiratory care specialist and is certified in basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS), and neonatal cardiac life support (NRC). His is also a member of the pediatric intensive are unit’s transport team. He provides respiratory therapy to patients on medical, surgical, psychiatric, pediatric, neonatal, trauma, cardiac, and emergency units.
In addition to receiving this year’s Quality Award, Arena was named the 1997 Respiratory Care Practitioner of the Year and the 1997 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit’s Respiratory Care Practitioner of the Year at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Prior to his respiratory care licensure, Arena worked in medical and surgical sales. He currently owns and operates Arena Marketing Associates of West Irondequoit.
