Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz appointed to new positions at the University of Rochester
February 15, 1999
Cyril Meyerowitz, B.D.S., M.S., has been named the Chair of the Eastman Department Dentistry for the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Meyerowitz also assumed the duties of the Director of Eastman Dental Center on January 1, 1999.
In July of 1997, Eastman Dental Center merged with the University of Rochester, uniting the two dental programs into one organization. Meyerowitz’ extensive experience as an educator, clinician, and researcher makes him unusually qualified for his dual position. Regarding the appointments, Meyerowitz said, "In addition to the educational benefits, I believe that finally, after 70 years, we have all the dental academic resources in one system. We have the unique opportunity to integrate an outstanding academic oral health effort into a major academic, health care center." He added, "The results will be the incorporation of all health services into one medical and dental care organization. This will allow us to achieve our vision to be a national model for the integration of dentistry and medicine in the areas of education, research, and clinical care."
Meyerowitz received his dental degree from the University of Witwatersrand School of Dentistry in South Africa. He completed his residency at Eastman Dental Center’s General Dentistry Program in 1975 and spent the following year working as a Clinical and Research Fellow with the University and Eastman. He received his M.S. degree in dental research from the University’s School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1979.
Meyerowitz joined the School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1976 as the director of the General Practice Residency Program. He was named Associate Chair of the Department of Clinical Dentistry in 1985 and promoted to the Chair in 1991.
In addition to publishing numerous articles, book chapters, and abstracts, Meyerowitz has been actively involved in dental education having initiated and then served as Chair and Councilor of the Section on Postdoctoral General Dentistry in the American Association of Dental Schools. He is a consultant to the American Dental Association and serves on the Commission on Dental Accreditation’s review committee for Postdoctoral General Dentistry. Meyerowitz is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
In addition, Meyerowitz has served as principal investigator or director on a number of research and educational grants and commercial contracts including the latest, a five-year Health and Human Service grant entitled "Rochester Training for Oral Health Clinical Trials."
