Mix 100.5 Radiothon Raises $225,000 for Strong Children's Hospital
March 18, 2002
The third annual Strong Children's Hospital Radiothon, hosted by Mix 100.5, was by far the most successful, raising at least $225,000 to help the hospital build a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The radiothon was held March 14-17 at EastView Mall and Strong Children's Hospital.
Diane DeNiro and Chuck Kelley, the morning team from Mix 100.5, hosted the radiothon with their colleagues, Michael Gately and Lori Bradley. Shelly Ribando, of 10NBC, also joined the crew on several occasions. Throughout the weekend, they interviewed children, families, and physicians who have been touched by Strong Children's Hospital, and encouraged listeners to pledge support.
"I am constantly amazed at the generosity of people in the Rochester area," says DeNiro. "I'll never be able to express my thanks to the families and children who let me into their lives to hear their stories, feel their pain, and share in their tragedies, and, more often, their triumphs. They are truly remarkable people we should all aspire to be like."
Raising at least $100,000 was important because Dave Christa, of Christa Construction, agreed to match that amount with his donation. When the $100,000 plateau was reached during the radiothon's dramatic final hour, the full match was guaranteed. Christa is a member of the Strong Children's Hospital board of directors.
All proceeds from this year's radiothon will go toward building a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The hospital is planning to build a new 11-bed PICU and an 11-bed Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) on the fourth floor, above the new emergency department. The PCICU will be named for Wal-Mart, which has committed to raising $1 million during the next five years.
During the past three years, the radiothon has raised more than $400,000 to help ill and injured children from Rochester and the surrounding region. Many thanks to Mix 100.5 for its unwavering commitment to the community and to two of the radiothon's most generous sponsors, Lakeshore Country Club and Perkins Restaurant and Bakery.
