April 30, 1997
Robert J. Panzer, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has been appointed medical director of StrongCare, a newly formed managed care plan providing health care for nearly 8,000 Rochester area residents.
In this role, Dr. Panzer will promote high quality, cost-effective clinical care, working closely with physicians and leaders at each of the six participating hospital networks: F.F. Thompson Hospital (in Canandaigua), Lakeside Memorial Hospital (in Brockport), Highland Hospital, Park Ridge Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, and Strong Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Panzer will be responsible for monitoring the quality and cost-effectiveness of care, developing common practices for patient care across the StrongCare network, and implementing innovative approaches to improving and maintaining the health of StrongCare members. Dr. Panzer will continue in his roles in the Medical Center and Strong Memorial Hospital as chief quality officer and associate medical director for clinical services. An internist, Dr. Panzer joined the Medical Center faculty in 1980 after completing a residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital.
"The creation and growth of StrongCare is an integral part of the Medical Center's vision of Rochester as becoming the country's healthiest community," says Jay H. Stein, M.D., senior vice president and vice provost for health affairs. "StrongCare is pleased that we have been successful in attracting someone with Dr. Panzer's interest in and commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and clinical practice evaluation and outcomes measurement."
"We are pleased to have Dr. Panzer join the StrongCare team," said David Klein, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Finger Lakes Blue Cross and Blue Shield. "His dedication to quality care and his experience in the Rochester community make him an ideal choice for the StrongCare medical directorship."
StrongCare Health Network was formed as a partnership between Finger Lakes Blue Cross and Blue Shield and leading Rochester-area hospitals to provide greater choice in health care coverage and delivery. StrongCare includes more than 1,000 area physicians and specialists, 41 of whom are listed in the publication The Best Doctors in America 1996.
