New Chair of Dermatology Appointed at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry

Alice Pentland, M.D., has been appointed the James H. Sterner Professor of Dermatology and chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She replaces Lowell A. Goldsmith, M.D., who became dean of the medical school earlier this year.
Dr. Pentland comes to Rochester from St. Louis, Missouri, where she was associate professor of medicine (dermatology) at Washington University School of Medicine; she held a secondary appointment there as associate professor of molecular biology and pharmacology. She was chief of dermatology at the V.A. Medical Center in St. Louis. Her other hospital appointments included Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital, and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis.
Dr. Pentland assumed her Rochester duties on October 1. Her research interests are in ultraviolet light and its effects on the skin as well as imaging applications in dermatology.
Dr. Pentland is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and other professional societies. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, and has been an ad-hoc reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine and other professional journals.
Dr. Pentland received her bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. After a medical internship at the University of North Carolina, she completed her dermatology residency at the University of Michigan and a post-doctoral fellowship in pharmacology at Washington University. She joined the Washington faculty in 1984 as an instructor, advancing to associate professor in 1992.
