Rochester Mayor to Discuss Uninsured at Medical Conference

May 03, 2006

More than 46 million adults in the United States had no health insurance at some time in the past year – about six million more than in 2000. That means more people who did not fill prescriptions, missed visits to the doctor or skipped meals to pay bills.

Robert Duffy, mayor of the city of Rochester, will be among the speakers at the University of Rochester Saturday, May 6, who will discuss the growing problem of the uninsured and ways to improve access to health care.

Duffy will deliver the keynote address at the annual regional meeting of the student section of the American Medical Association. Other speakers include: Sister Christine Wagner, S.S.J., Ph.D., director of St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center in Rochester; Jackie Lyttle, director of Safety Net and Government Programs for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield; David Guzick, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the Rochester School of Medicine; and Charles Phelps, Ph.D., University of Rochester provost.

“The medical students of the AMA are keenly aware of the impact that this problem will have on the future of health care,” said Joshua Miller, a second year medical student and president of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry chapter of the AMA. “We have made covering the uninsured our highest priority and look forward to sharing ideas with students throughout the Northeast about how best to address this issue.”

Students from 18 medical schools in the Northeast will attend. The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry chapter of the AMA organized the meeting.

Discussion sessions will be held on electronic medical record systems and on disparities in health care for minorities. Students also can investigate various medical specialties and residency programs.
