Domestic violence expert will speak at Medical Center

Domestic violence, its impact on children and the role of community services and the legal system will be the subject of a talk Wednesday, June 7, at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Peter Jaffe, Ph. D., a professor of education at the University of Western Ontario and the academic director of the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women & Children in London, Ontario, will speak at 9 a.m. in the Class of 1962 Auditorium in the Medical Center as part of the University Department of Psychiatry’s Grand Rounds.

The grand rounds presentation is part of a two-day visit by Jaffe that will include meetings with University experts on violence, school officials and Monroe County judges.

Jaffe also will take part in an all-day conference on children and violence Thursday, June 8, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 70 State St. The conference is sponsored by: Rochester Safe Start, Children's Institute, Monroe County Family Court, University of Rochester Department of Psychiatry and Children's Center, the Law Guardian Program, and Chesworth, O'Brien, Johnstone, Welch & Leone, LLP.

The grand rounds presentation and the conference are free of charge and open to the public and media.

Jaffe has co-authored nine books and more than 70 articles related to children, families and the justice system. He is the Director Emeritus for the Centre for Children and Families in the Justice System, which is a children's mental health center specializing in issues which bring children and families into the justice system in London, Ontario.

He was the founding chairman of the London Co-ordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse and currently is actively involved in research on the impact of family violence on children. He also helped start the Battered Women's Advocacy Clinic in London and is a former chairman of its board of directors.
