J. Daniel Subtelny honored with 2006 Brophy Distinguished Service Award
July 27, 2006
J. Daniel Subtelny, D.D.S., M.S., longtime dental educator, received the 2006 James E. Brophy Award during the Excellence in Orthodontics Luncheon held in May 2006 during the 106th AAO Annual Session in Las Vegas.
The award is named in honor of James E. Brophy, who served as the AAO executive director from 1961 to 1985.
In further recognition of his dedication to teaching, the AAO dedicated its 2006 education conference in Subtelny’s honor. The Association hosted the J. Daniel Subtelny Education Leadership Conference on May 5, in conjunction with the 106th AAO Annual Session. This conference, which was open to orthodontic faculty members, focused on evidence-based dentistry.
Subtelny’s dedication to orthodontics spans a 50-year career and started when he organized and established the Eastman Dental Dispensary’s first accredited Department of Orthodontics. He has remained at the Center for his entire career and today, at the age of 84, he continues to teach as professor emeritus in the Division of Orthodontics.
Stephanos Kyrkanides, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., a graduate of Dentistry at the University of Rochester, has been a member of the orthodontic faculty since 1998. He is program director and chair of the Division Orthopedics and is pleased that Subtelny was honored by the AAO award.
